UK Athletics' own selection policy is stricter than most other European federations' - that comparison is documented on the selection policy comparison page. Two other pages on this site show that, at Olympic/World level, field event medallists are older on average than track medallists (ages of medallists), and arrive with more prior European Championships experience (area championships before a first global medal). Put together, that raises a question worth testing: if a selection policy withholds championship experience from qualified athletes in events where the data suggests that experience matters most, does it show up in the entrant and medal record over time? This page and the next test that. They do not establish it - page 2 finds the same entrant-share gap already present at U20 level, before senior selection applies, so selection policy can be at most part of any explanation.
UK Athletics' own published accounts confirm medals are the stated aim, not an inference: its strategic objectives for 2024/25 name "World Class Programme: Supporting athletes towards winning Olympic & Paralympic medals" as the first of five pillars, and its plan for the Los Angeles cycle is explicitly to "continue to raise performance standards and manage team sizes to ensure both value and performance impact." This page tests that directly: for every country group in our reference table, by four-year period since 2000 (aligned to Olympic years), what share of entrants at European Championships and Olympic/World Championships went on to win a medal (places 1-3 in the final), and how that has moved over time.
Country is read from the World Athletics result URL for each entry (e.g.
great-britain-ni/...), not from our athlete reference table - that table is only
populated for athletes who reached a final, so joining to it would silently drop roughly half
of all entrants. The result-row country also reflects who an athlete actually raced for at
that specific competition, which matters for athletes who have switched allegiance.
Entrant = one distinct athlete/event/competition combination (an athlete entered in two events at the same championship counts as two entrants, since each event is a separate selection decision). Medal = that same combination reaching the final and placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Country groups come from our own reference table of European countries. The United Kingdom, France and Germany are each their own group; the rest are regional groupings. Six countries in the table (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ireland, Israel, Russia) have no assigned group and are shown as "Other Europe (ungrouped)". "Europe (all)" sums every country in the reference table - this covers the great majority of European Athletics members but is not a literal all-of-Europe medal count, since it excludes any European nation not in that table.
Only individual track and field events are in this database (no relays, marathon or race walks) - see the events list on the ages of medallists page for the full set.
The four-year periods do not contain equal numbers of championships. 2016-2019 contains roughly five, 2020-2023 roughly four, and 2024-2027 three, with that period only around two-thirds elapsed. Shares and conversion rates are comparable across periods. Absolute entrant and medal counts are not, and are used here for illustration rather than as a trend.
GBR's conversion rate has not fallen. It has risen. GBR converted 12.4% of entrants into medals in 2020-2023 and 12.82% in 2024-2027, against a European average of 7.4% and 7.5%, and has matched or exceeded the European average in 4 of the last 7 periods.
On this measure alone, the selective approach looks like it is working, and that is not qualified away here.
But conversion is a ratio, and the denominator has been shrinking. GBR entrants fell from 329 (2016-2019) to 258 to 156. Page 2 splits those entrants into track and field and finds that the entire conversion improvement sits on the track side.
